With the hardware the boys’ and girls’ ski teams have been bringing home this season, it might be time to build a new trophy case at Cook County High School.
It’s been a hectic season for the boys and girls slalom ski teams this season. Head Coach John Oberholtzer has had the kids practicing and racing a lot, and so far, the results have been topnotch.
“We missed a lot of races last year because of covid, so to make up for that, we have been going to a lot of races this season.”
How good has the boys’ team been?
“The boys’ team has had a great year. We’ve missed a first-place once by one point and second place by one point at another meet, but we have taken our share of plaques home,” Oberholtzer said.
So, the boys’ team results look like this: Second at Giant’s Ridge/Virginia Invite, first at the Giant’s Ridge/Hibbing Invite, first at the Spirit Mountain Gitchi Gummi Invite, second at Giant’s Ridge MLK a.m., third at the Giant’s Ridge MLK p.m. race, second at Mond Du Lac, first at Lutsen Mountain Koo Koo and second at the Mont Du Lac SPS Invite.
“Duluth East is our top competitor, but we have a friendly rivalry going on with them and all of the teams,” noted Oberholtzer.
As for the girls’ team, they have put together a great season despite not having many skiers. The girls have a fourth-place finish at Giant’s Ridge Virginia, second at Giant’s Ridge/Hibbing, second at Spirit Mountain, 11th at Giant’s Ridge MLK a.m. and, seventh at the Giant’s Ridge MLK p.m. race. In the last three races, the girls finished third, at Mond Du Lac, first at Lutsen Mountains Koo Koo, and second at Mont Du Lac DPS.
I have to give my assistant coaches a lot of credit for the success the kids have had,” Oberholtzer said. Plamen Dimitrov and Gene Dressely have done a tremendous job working with the kids. And we have been out practicing in some really cold weather.
“I also want to give a big shout out and thank you to Lutsen Mountains and the ski patrol. We couldn’t do this if we didn’t have their help.”
