Ray Dressely had a great day on the slopes said head coach Charles Lamb.
The eighth-grader finished in fourth place to lead the Cook County boys’ team to a second-place finish at the Virginia Invite, which was held December 20, at Giants Ridge.
“Tough, fast skiing earned Ray a trip to the stage with an impressive 4th place finish,” said Lamb. “Ray missed the podium by only two-hundredths of a second.”
Approximately 60 boys and 60 girls from eight Arrowhead Conference teams skied two runs of slalom on the Innsbruck run.
“The weather and snow conditions were excellent, said Lamb, with temps in the twenties and partly cloudy, making great weather for ski racing.”
“Masen McKeever had a fast first run but ran into trouble on his second (his ski pole broke), and he blew out at the bottom of the icy headwall, he hiked and finished 19th,” said coach Lamb.
“Cy Oberholtzer skied two solid runs just missing the top ten (11th), followed by Elijah Blanck (13th) and Ben Obinger (15th),” added the coach.
JV boys
Andrew Hallberg skied two great runs and won 2nd place in junior varsity, followed closely by Reuben Youngdahl (3rd).
Finn Taylor finished 6th and Cody Lang 7th, in what coach Lamb said was a great effort for his JV skiers.
The CCHS boys’ team finished in second place.
Duluth East won the team crown.
Bren Ellison from Duluth East won first place for the boys.
Varsity girls
Halle Lamb (Charles’s daughter) threw down two great runs and earned her first trip to the varsity podium, landing 2nd place overall!
Kalina Dimitrova, eighth grade, continues to improve, said Lamb. She finished 11th, just missing the top ten in the varsity.
JV girls
Cook County girls ruled the junior varsity event.
“Genevieve Silence skied two really fast runs winning 1st place in the JV race. She was followed by Allie Duclos (2nd) and Sophia Blanck (3rd) for a clean sweep of the junior varsity podium!” said the exultant head coach.
Duluth Denfeld’s Margaret Duncan was the girls’ winner, and Virginia Area took the girls’ team championship.
“I’m really proud of every racer on our team for pushing the limit, completing both their runs and earning some impressive results,” said coach Lamb.
“We had well attended, great training during the holiday break, it’s exciting to watch the kids train hard and improve,” he added.
The next race, the Hibbing Invite was held January 9, at Giants Ridge.
