This winter’s snowfall was less than stellar, but that didn’t stop Woodbury, MN skiers from shining on the national stage. Elizabeth Wallace and Trevor Edlund, both from Woodbury, competed at the U.S. Junior National Championships for ski jumping. The championships were held in Park City, Utah during the first week of March.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Kathy and Brian Wallace of Woodbury and the granddaughter of Delores and the late Lyle Saethre of Grand Marais.
Elizabeth and Trevor began ski jumping at a very young age. Now, as teenagers, their hard work and dedication to the sport are really starting to pay off.
On March 4, Elizabeth Wallace won the individual jumping title for J2 Girls (14-15 year olds). “I was really nervous,” she confessed afterward, “but I just knew I could do it.”
That same day, Trevor Edlund, also in the J2 class, took the bronze in the boy’s individual competition. Later in the week he joined forces with two other jumpers from the Central Division to win gold in the team competition.
The St. Paul Ski Club is very proud of the way Elizabeth and Trevor represented their club, their Division, their sport, and themselves at the Junior National Championships.
Summer jumping on the plastic will begin in June. Spectators and jumpers are always welcome at Harrington Hill (located on the west side of 494, between Lake Road and Bailey Road exits). For more information go to www.stpaulskiclub.com.
Elizabeth’s brother, Brian, 18, has been featured in the Cook County News-Herald in previous years. He began ski jumping in second grade. Brian was in Turkey this year for the World Junior Ski Championships also in February. He came in 45th in the world. Also, he finished 3rd in the USA Cup, which was a series of six competitions around the United States. His plans after graduation in June are to move to Park City, Utah to train for the Olympic team for 2014 in Socchi, Russia. That team will be announced at the beginning of January 2014.
The ski jumpers’ mother, Kathy Wallace proudly shared the information about her children’s accomplishment, but also said, “Now I have two. Oh my.”
