Summer has arrived early in Cook County and the Playhouse is ready for an exciting summer season. As we celebrate our 40th birthday this year, we think the public will have ample opportunity to see and enjoy our incredible talent!
First, starting on June 24 and continuing the following holiday weekend, is the acclaimed Treasure Island.
If you missed the production this spring, this is your chance to see it or to consider bringing your guests to enjoy. Treasure Island
is filled with pirates, drama, and fights and is a delight for children and adults. Annie Enneking, who did the combat choreography, is back with us again this weekend to help the actors brush up on their combat skills. For those of us lucky enough to see the play this spring, the combat scenes are especially memorable.
Following Treasure Island
is Cole Porter’s You Never
Know.
We have a band for this play and rehearsals started already. We are still looking for a trumpet player. Thecast for the play has been chosen and they are working on the songs under the direction of Shelby Anderson.
Sterling Dance alumnus Emily Schulte will be here this week to begin teaching 1920s dance moves to our cast and then she will return again in July to help us refine the dances. This promises to be a fabulous production!
Looking for some volunteer work? We will be setting up the set for You Never
Know
on July 11. We always need help with construction and painting. Ushers are also being recruited. With three major productions this summer we are grateful for any assistance. Because of a change in FCC regulations, we have had the microphones we can use reduced from 10 to three. We hope to purchase at least three more usable microphones at a cost of $150 each. Finally, our five summer interns have started working and we are very grateful to the county for its $4,000 of assistance to help with paying the interns. Donations still being accepted.
On Sunday, July 25 we are having a huge 40th birthday celebration for the Playhouse. Mark your calendars—we’ll start the party with a BBQ at 6 p.m. and then at 7 p.m. we will party at a “back stage” concert/dance with Cavern
Beat!
Weather permitting the dance will be held outside behind the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
Cavern Beat
was here several years ago and had rave reviews. Theband looks and sounds like the Beatles.
This night promises to be a grand celebration with great food and music.
“I Know I’m Going”—the phrase on the Playhouse’s button this summer—is making me smile. Cook County…Lake Superior… blue skies…soft breezes… and plays at the Grand Marais Playhouse on a summer evening. What more could we want? See you there!
