Six Wisconsin men escape injury in motorhome crash

A motorhome with six passengers ran off the side of Highway 61 about one mile south of Taconite Harbor Energy Center in Schroeder at about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31. All six occupants escaped serious injury.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2001 Beaver Motor Coach, driven by Mark Damaske, 66, of Mequon, Wisconsin, was traveling northeast when it ran off the road. Damaske told the State Patrol that he veered to the right to avoid a small vehicle pulling a camper that crossed the centerline.

No information is available on that vehicle.

When Damaske swerved, the motorhome got hung up on the small shoulder and the motorhome went into the right ditch hitting an approach and trees.

Trooper Leah Carpenter said it was windy and rainy at the time of the crash and noted that there are no shoulders on that stretch of Highway 61.

The driver and the other five men in the motorhome were transported via ambulance to the Two Harbors hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All of the men were from Wisconsin.

The motorhome suffered severe damage and was towed by Lake City Towing.
