Single car accident damages retaining wall in Grand Marais




Residents in the area of Third Avenue West in Grand Marais were awakened by a “screech and crash” at 3:00 a.m. on Monday, April 10. Cook County Law Enforcement received calls reporting that a white car had crashed into the embankment at the intersection of Third Avenue West and First Street.

Sheriff deputies responded and found that the driver, Brian Michael Norman, 22, of Grand Marais had suffered an injury to his hand. He was taken to North Shore Hospital where he was treated before being taken into custody. Norman was charged with driving under the influence.

His vehicle, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, suffered extensive damage and will likely be totaled.

The retaining wall at the intersection was damaged in the crash. The retaining wall is maintained by the City of Grand Marais. A city official said the retaining wall would be repaired when insurance issues are worked out.
