Simula continues his voyage

After making the news on May 12, 2009 when his birch bark canoe was swamped in the Duluth harbor, Erik Simula re-pitched his vessel and continued on his 1,000-mile journey. Fortunately, Simula and his dog, Kitigan, have seen relatively smooth paddling as they proceed—despite encounters with a mountain lion and bear!

Simula’s friend and employer, Sue McCloughan of Bearskin Lodge, gave an update on May 31, letting his followers know that he had made it to Grand Rapids in time for his daughter’s graduation. To get there, he had traveled from Duluth to Indian Point, to Fond Du Lac, to Carlton and up the St. Louis River.

Simula is now on his return journey. He contacted his wife, Dawn Simula, at Dora Lake, which is north of Winnibigoshish. The family notes that phone service is very spotty, so it may be awhile before there is more news. Erik Simula plans to finish his trip like the voyageurs of old, at the Grand Portage Rendezvous on August 7.
