Silver Bay Airport closes due to safety concerns

The city of Silver Bay closed its airport runway May 31 after Minnesota Department of Transportation inspectors noted deteriorating pavement conditions created safety concerns.

Pilots are advised to land at adjacent airports if they plan to visit this area. The closest airport to Silver Bay is the Two Harbors Airport, which is 20 miles away.

The city of Silver Bay, MnDOT and the Federal Aviation Administration will meet June 13 to discuss options for the future of the airport.

Silver Bay Airport is in Lake County and sits along the North Shore in northeast Minnesota. The airport has been operational since 1965.

MnDOT’s Office of Aeronautics promotes general and commercial aviation throughout the state, and provides aircraft registration, airport development, aviation system planning and education. The office also maintains and operates aviation navigational systems and government aircraft services. Learn more at www.mndot.gov/aero.
