Join the fun and be a part of history as we celebrate the 40th Annual Tofte Trek 10k Run/Walk on July 4, 2019, in Tofte, at Birch Grove Community Center, Tofte. After the race, join the fun in Tofte with games, vendors, and a parade.
Jan Horak started the Tofte Trek race in 1980, creating a way for local people to enjoy the 4th of July. The first race had 32 runners, with John Melang from Lutsen taking home the winner’s award. Jan recruited his family to help organize the race over the years.
In the beginning, Jan and his wife Kathy printed the race shirts by ironing on the graphics themselves, sometimes until one o’clock in the morning. The graphics, often times, represented situations which occurred during past races, such as encounters with moose, bears, and beavers.
The main race runs on cross country ski, snowmobile, and hiking trails in the Superior National Forest above Birch Grove School in Tofte. Runners typically need to plod their way through mud puddles on the trail, creating a fun challenge for many.
The race is now organized by the Sugarbush Trail Association in Tofte, which maintains the 65km cross country ski trail system, accessed at Britton Peak, Oberg Mountain, and Moose Fence trailheads.
