Two years ago, the inaugural North Shore Readers and Writers Festival sold out quickly. Registration for workshops and seminars opens Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

This year’s festival will be Thursday, Nov. 2 – Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017. More than 20 authors and publishing professionals will conduct classes, craft seminars, author talks, panel discussions at the biannual North Shore Readers and Writers Festival in Grand Marais, Minn.

“The community of Grand Marais has long been known for its love of the arts, including the written word, and for providing a place of inspiration and retreat for writers and artists,” says Linda Jurek, executive director for Visit Cook County.

Over a dozen note-worthy Minnesota authors will lead this year’s conference, including: William Kent Krueger, an author and crime writer, best known for his series of books featuring Cork O’Connor, which are set primarily in Minnesota and for his stand-alone book, Ordinary Grace, which won the Edgar Award for Best Novel of 2013; Peter Geye of Minneapolis, the author of Wintering, which was published by Knopf in June 2016; Patricia Hampl, who was born in St. Paul and attended the University of Minnesota, a contributing editor at The Alaska Quarterly Review; Faith Sullivan of Minneapolis, who was born and raised in southern Minnesota and is the author of Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse (Milkweed Editions, 2015), and Gardenias (Milkweed Editions, 2005); Kao Kalia Yang who was born in Ban Vinai Refugee Camp came to Minnesota in 1987 and authored The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir (Coffee House Press, 2008) and The Song Poet (Metropolitan Press, 2016); Lisa Lunge- Larsen, an award-winning author and storyteller who was born and raised in Norway and currently lives in Duluth.

During the conference, a full exhibit hall will be populated by presses, including Red Bird Chapbooks, University of Minnesota, Beaver’s Pond, Minnesota Historical Society, Holy Cow!, Water~Stone Review, Coffee House, and Graywolf.

Classes are $60 for Art Colony members and $65 for non-members. . Craft Seminars are $30 for Art Colony members and $33 for non-members. . Author Talks are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. . Full Festival Passes are $370 for Art Colony members and $395 for non-members. . Grand Marais Art Colony membership: $25 for an individual, $50 a family, $75 sustaining, $100 sponsor, $250 patron, $500 benefactor, and $1,000 + partner.

The Grand Marais Art Colony partners with the Grand Marais Library and Drury Lane Bookstore to host the festival.
