In reference to the recent Cook County News-Herald article quoting Lori Swanson, our state attorney general, I wish to offer a little insight into propane prices.
Every summer we call around to find out what price the area providers of propane are offering us for the coming fall and winter. One propane dealer began to charge us an exorbitant rent for their tank because we were “using too little.”
I called around and found another carrier who was offering a “new client” price way below what we were being told was the “new deal” for that fall. I told the dealer who was going to charge the exorbitant rent that we would be switching to another dealer. There was some sputtering—they couldn’t drop their price that low. They said, “Oh no! You don’t want to do that [switch] because it is such a hassle!”
News flash: it is no skin off my nose if I switch carriers because the new company pumps the old tank empty and sets it aside. You are given credit for that propane—you do not lose and your new tank is filled at the new, better (hopefully!) price.
We have learned to do this every year. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are stuck. Shop around!
