Sharing Leisure Time

Amy and I recorded our KRWC AM 1360 radio show Leisure Time at In Hot Water last week. It was live. We had the morning coffee ladies as our guests at a special time of 5 p.m.

This is a group of local Annandale women who have been meeting every Monday and Friday to enjoy coffee for over 17 years. The last three years have been under the watchful eyes of Nikki Seaburg and Megan Champlin, the new owners of In Hot Water. These two generously served all of us their Veggie Beast Sandwich and the Italian White Bean Soup. Both were amazing.

To top it off we also were given the recipes! Not so when it came to sharing the recipes for the delicious In Hot Water scones, cardamom cookies and my favorite, the Monster Cookie that is as big as my face! All they would say is that they make the monster cookies with a whole lot of love and a little bit of hate.

Leisure Time is a two-hour show that airs the last Thursday of the month from 1 until 3 pm. My friend Amy and I have been recording the show in the studio for the past several months.

We talk about all the fun we have in our “Leisure Time.” Books we’ve read, the movies we have seen, restaurants we’ve tried and so on. The second segment we try and share a fun recipe. The third segment of the show is called Out and About where Amy fills the listeners and me in on all the upcoming activities in the area.

The fourth and final segment is usually a giveaway. Recently, In Hot Water gave away a gift basket with two Leisure Time mugs, coffee and tea. The support shown to a relatively new radio show by Nikki and Megan has been awesome, so we were happy to move the show to their business.

This was our first out and about, live show. We did not know what to expect from these wonderful coffee ladies. It was fun to hear about their book clubs and upcoming movies they would like to see. We even gave away three jars of Salted Caramel Hot Fudge. (I should have brought four because one person was home with a pouty lip, not naming any names.)

I was most touched by the final segment of the show. The microphone was passed from woman to woman, and each shared what this group meant to them. The support through tears and trying times, sometimes listening to tragic heartbreaks and nodding with a knowing look and a hug to heal. Other times sharing the joy of a family wedding or the birth of a grandchild. The bonds they have made with one another are long lasting and strong.

These women are an inspiration to me, and I wish them another 17 years of joy and companionship! Thank you all for sharing a couple of hours with Amy and me in your Leisure Time.

“How many slams in an old screen door? Depends how loud you shut it.
How many slices in a bread? Depends how thin you cut it.
How much good inside a day? Depends how good you live ‘em.
How much love inside a friend? Depends how much you give ‘em.”
