Grand Marais resident Shane Steele has been picked to be the Climate Action/ Greensteps coordinator for Grand Marais.
Steele will work with a steering committee consisting of city administrator Mike Roth, mayor Jay Arrowsmith- DeCoux, PUC commissioner George Wilkes, and Nordic Nature Group liaison Olya Wright.
Over the past year, the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission and the Grand Marais City Council have taken a firm stance on climate change. On January 11, 2017, city council passed a resolution recognizing climate change as being “perilous to the earth’s natural systems and human civilization.”
Council, through a resolution, also endorsed Carbon Fee and Dividend as the national policy solution to significantly curtailing CO2 emissions into our atmosphere.
A grant from the McKnight Foundation will fund the 10-hour per week position at $20 per hour for two years.
Plans for this new position include meeting with the steering committee once or twice a month to discuss climate change topics and what the city can do to mitigate its carbon footprint.
