Shakespeare and State Fair at Grand Marais Playhouse

The Grand Marais Playhouse wraps up another fabulous summer theater festival this weekend with the final performances of Moon over Buffalo on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and the final performance of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change on Saturday at 7 p.m.

There are still tickets left, so don’t miss out! The box office is open an hour before each show. All seats are general admission. Performances are at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, 51 West Fifth Street in Grand Marais.

Not people to just sit around, the Playhouse has two presentations the following week.

On August 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, Jackson Nickolay and Jacob Christiansen will present The Rest is Silence, a review of some of Shakespeare’s most well known and loved plays.

Arranged by Nickolay and Christensen, this collection of short scenes and monologues provides a sampling of all the genres of Shakespeare’s brilliance with scenes ranging from the dark tragedies like Hamlet to comedies like Taming of the Shrew and even covering some the histories such as Richard III.

Those who missed Yvonne Caruthers’ performance at Drury Lane Books on July 1 have another chance to hear her play as the Grand Marais Playhouse presents the one woman show In Search of the Perfect G String on August 15.

Come ready to be engrossed in the literature and genius that is Shakespeare. Tickets are $10 for adults and free to students 18 and under.

On Saturday August 15 at 7 p.m. the Playhouse will present In Search of the Perfect G String, a onewoman show written and performed by Yvonne Caruthers.

When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” how many kids say they want to play the cello in a major orchestra with a famous conductor and travel the world? That’s what happened to cellist Yvonne Caruthers, originally from Spokane, Washington. “I didn’t grow up in a family of musicians, I grew up in a family that went backpacking in the North Cascade Mountains. We skinny-dipped in icy cold lakes, caught fish for breakfast, and watched baby mountain goats frolic in snowfields. No wonder my peers in music school thought I was…different.”

In Search of the Perfect G-String is based on Yvonne’s life experiences, from student days at Tanglewood to great concert halls around the world, interspersed, of course, with countless hours in lonely practice rooms, which also gave her time to speculate on (ahem), “personal” items. This production may not be suitable for all audiences.

In Search of the Perfect G-String debuted at the DC Fringe Festival in 2013, and the Kennedy Center in 2014.

Tickets are $15. Performance is at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Looking ahead to Labor Day weekend, add the Playhouse to your list of activities, beginning with Monroe Crossing, the Midwest’s premier bluegrass and gospel quintet. Tickets often sell out for this group, so buy them now at tix.com. There will be appetizers and cake at the September 3 event too.

On Friday and Saturday, September 4 and 5 at 7 p.m., enjoy Ole and Lena at the State Fair.

The calendar has finally turned over to Ole’s favorite event of the year – State Fair time.

The real-life husband and wife acting team of Michael and Julie Bateson bring the loveable and universally known Scandinavian couple, Ole and Lena, to life in a wonderfully interactive play that turns the State Fair upside down.

The Batesons have been performing Ole and Lena for over 10 years for a wide variety of groups and theatre audiences across the upper Midwest. Their homespun humor strikes a chord with all ages.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under.
