If the recent Polar League seventh- and eighth-grade girls’ basketball tournament is any indication, Cook County’s girls’ basketball future looks bright.
The girls traveled to Esko on Saturday, Feb. 2, to play in the 12-team tournament against the likes of Esko, Barnum, Moose Lake-Willow River, and Cromwell.
First up, the girls beat Esko Gold and then defeated Cromwell to advance to the next pool. Next, they defeated Two Harbors and South Ridge to play in the championship game against Esko Blue, who is Esko’s all eighth-grade traveling team.
“They played strong, but ended up losing by 10 points to a tough, deep Esko bench in the championship game,” said CCHS varsity coach Kelly Hawsen.
“It was a great day for our girls’ program as we haven’t advanced that far since I can remember,” said Hawsen. “Their coach, Kyler Hawsen, said he was proud of the girls’ effort, hustle, and toughness.
“The girls made a huge improvement over the day, and there was a great parent and family fan base who came and supported the team. At one point, our Cook County fans were doing the wave to show their support!”
