Seven football players earn honors, Hackett named top lineman

The Cook County High School football team ended its season with a record of nine wins and two losses. Both losses came against Northwoods, who beat the Vikings in the Section 7 nine-man championship game to advance to state.

Following the end of the season, seven Vikings received accolades for their outstanding play.

Whether he was blocking for his running backs or chasing the opposing quarterback, senior offensive and defensive lineman Billy Hackett had a fantastic year, and his play wasn’t lost on area coaches who voted him the Sub-District lineman of the year.

On defense, Hackett finished with 66 tackles, seven for a loss. Hackett also recorded three sacks and one fumble recovery

At 5’11”, 260 pounds with quick feet, several colleges are looking at Hackett to come in and help their programs.

Four Vikings, including Hackett, earned First Team All Sub-District honors: The others were Ethan Sporn, Josh Prom, and Dillon Sjogren.

Junior running back Ethan Sporn rushed for 1223 yards on 135 carries for a 9.1 yard average per run in seven games. He scored 16 touchdowns on the ground and caught one ball for a touchdown. He caught 11 balls for 147 yards, averaging 13.2 yards per catch. As an outside linebacker, Sporn finished with 61 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Junior fullback Dillon Sjogren rushed for 265 yards on 74 carries and caught one ball for 18 yards. Sjogren, who plays middle linebacker on defense, led the teams in tackles with 71, eight for a loss.

Viking quarterback Josh Prom completed 42 of 78 passes for 474 yards. Prom rushed for 813 yards on 122 carries. He scored 13 rushing touchdowns and passed for five TDs. Prom also finished with 60 tackles from his outside linebacker position.

Earning Honorable Mention, All Sub-District honors were juniors Andrew Miller, Connor Somnis and senior Mike Burton.

Connor Somnis had 51 tackles, three for a loss, one fumble recovery, and two interceptions.

Junior running back Andrew Miller rushed for five touchdowns in three games. He carried the ball for 225 yards on 24 attempts and averaged 9.4 yards per run. He also had six catches for 130 yards and one catch for a touchdown. On defense Miller had 39 tackles, one sack, one interception for a touchdown and one safety.

In four games senior wideout Mikey Burton made seven catches for 58 yards and scored one TD. On defense, Burton finished with two quarterback sacks.
