Serious injury in Schroeder rollover

A single-vehicle crash on Highway 61 in Schroeder at 4:53 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2013 sent six people to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Kimberly L. Reno, 39, Anoka, was driving a 2001 GMC Yukon south on Highway 61. Reno apparently drifted over the right shoulder of the road near the Taconite Harbor Energy Center and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll over. Kimberly Reno was wearing a seat belt and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Anthony Reno, 56, also of Anoka, was seriously injured when he ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt. He was transported to Essentia – St. Mary’s Hospital by medical helicopter. According to Essentia spokesperson Kim Kaiser on Wednesday, June 5, Reno was still hospitalized but in good condition.

Four children were in the SUV, all of them wearing seat belts or in child safety seats. A 15-year-old, 7-yearold and a child under 1 year old suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A 9-year-old was uninjured in the crash.

Two Cook County Sheriff Deputies, a State Patrol Officer, members of the Tofte-Schroeder Rescue Squad and two Cook County ambulances responded to the scene. Each ambulance transported three people to Cook County North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais.

The accident is still under investigation, however State Trooper Chris Thostenson said charges are possibly pending for inattentive driving, car seat improperly fastened, and a seatbelt violation.
