Learn everything you ever wanted to know about your septic system and how a good system helps protect water quality. All are invited to attend Septic Systems 101, a workshop that is free to the public, on July 10 at Lutsen Resort. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. with coffee and a selection of fruit and pastries from Lutsen’s chefs. The workshop begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m.
Expert local and regional speakers will discuss system design, installation, care and maintenance, a do-it-yourself maintenance plan to keep your system healthy for years, the latest information about new Minnesota Rules and local ordinances, and landscaping your system with other tips to help protect shoreland areas. A panel discussion will follow, and you’ll also learn what’s available to help finance repairs or replacement and who to call if you have problems.
Speakers will include Barb McCarthy, MPCA’s area coordinator for subsurface septic treatment systems; Karen Evens, the MPCA watershed projects manager for our county; Ilena Berg, Cook County water planner; Mitch Everson, septic system inspector for Cook County; and Scott Robinson, an advanced designer/installer and service provider.
Four continuing education credits will be offered to Realtors attending the workshop; to obtain these credits a $35 fee is required. The credits are made available with the assistance of Cook County Higher Education and have been approved by the state Department of Commerce.
