Just when we think life is moving along smoothly here at the Senior Center, we had a wrench thrown at us about moving up to the new Community Center. Who decided this? The countyappointed community center steering committee. They took it upon themselves to assign us a space in the new community center, move us up there and take our current funding from the county and put it into their operating budget. Thanks for talking to us first!
After a public community meeting at the courthouse and one down at the Senior Center, we won. They heard that we want to stay put.
The community center steering committee voted at a work session on Friday, May 20 to take the Senior Center space and our funding out of the plan and let us stay where we are.
Funny thing about it is, they have no control over whether we moved or not. The Senior Center belongs to the seniors who use it. And I am proud to say seniors spoke up at the meetings and the message was heard—we like our space and we are not moving!
Thank you to all of you who spoke up and voiced your rights; it does pay to speak up.
Every month we have been having a “Dining at the Senior Center” drawing. The monthly winner is the lucky recipient of a gift certificate graciously donated by local businesses. On May 1, we drew for our April prize, which was a gift certificate to the Pie Place and three free lunches at the Senior Center. Gladys Anderson was the lucky winner.
For our May prize, we will be drawing for a $25 cash gift certificate from our friends at the Grand Marais State Bank. Our June prize will be a $30 Gift Certificate to Birchbark Books and Gifts.
To be eligible to win…all you have to do is stop in for lunch. With each lunch you will receive one entry ticket. Eat more often…win more often!
On Thursday, June 16 we will be having a special Father’s Day luncheon. On the menu is a pork chop dinner with all the fixings. Mark your calendars and bring your father, daughter, son, date or friend!
The new roof and garage door have been installed. These improvements are very expensive. Please remember your friends here at the Senior Center when it comes time to open your hearts and checkbooks to make donations.
In June our bus will be traveling to Grand Portage twice, Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 21. These trips are now free, thanks to bus sponsorship from Grand Portage Casino. You will also receive $5 free slot play and a certificate for lunch at the snack bar. Reserve your spot by signing up at or calling the Senior Center at 387-2660.
A group of four of us just returned from a wonderful twonight trip to Hinckley Grand Casino. We joined a group of Canadians on a luxury bus from Thunder Bay. We enjoyed some great food, wonderful company and some fun new slot machines. All in all, I think we all returned with more than our shirts on our back!
After lunch most days of the week we play card games. The game of choice lately has been Push. We are looking for more players to join us.
Beginning Wednesday, June 8 after lunch we will be watching the first season of Hot in Cleveland starring Betty White. The cost is free! Join us for plenty of laughs, good company and even popcorn!
