Seniors at 1st and 2nd Thrift Store

Many of the busy seniors at the Cook County Senior Center also volunteer at the First and Second Thrift Store. The store has many great bargains and the proceeds go back to community nonprofits.

If you haven’t heard—we have moved again! This will be our fourth location— fortunately it is still in the Cobblestone building across from the Grand Marais Dairy Queen. Again the move was done by the winter crew, this time led by Gerry Grant. Gerry deserves a huge thank you for organizing the move, finding helpers and all without missing a day of keeping the store open.

Come and check it out, we are larger, lighter and more handicapped accessible! Our hours are Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.

July 1 will be the beginning of our eighth year, it seems like yesterday. We are proud to say that we have given almost a quarter of a million dollars back to the nonprofits of Cook County. When you shop at the store, you too are helping give to our participating local nonprofits. If you volunteer, you may designate your hours to a Cook County nonprofit of your choice. We always can use more volunteers. We have many different shifts available, as short as just two hours.

What started out as a dream of a number of people has become a viable business in our community. Many of our Canadian customers and tourists see us as a destination. Our locals shop regularly.

Let us not forget the many people who donate quality items to the store. This past month we have received some incredible donations of great merchandise. We need a good supply line to keep the customers coming back—and hopefully increasing the amount we can give back to the community.

In the next month or so, we will be moving our donation center from the Senior Center garage to the rear of our new store. When we are fully moved and ready to accept at the new location we will let you know! In the meantime we will accept donations Wednesdays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. in the Senior Center garage.

They say it takes a village to raise a child—the same goes for us—it takes not only our county, but many people beyond our borders. We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our volunteers, patrons and donators in our community. Thank you all, for your continuing support.
