The Cook County/Silver Bay Senior Legion baseball team couldn’t find enough offense against Taconite and fell 14-4 in five innings. The game was played July 1 in Marble, Minnesota.
Play came to an end after five innings when the game was called because of the ten-run mercy rule.
After a scoreless first inning Taconite put four runs on the board in the second. Neither team scored in the third and the Vikings rallied in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to close within one. The Vikings big inning came when Jake Mixdorf and Isaac Sandstrom were both walked, driving in two runs. A sacrifice fly by Jake Stadler also pushed across another run.
However, Taconite came back in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs to go up by eight. Taconite would add three more runs in the fifth while the Vikings were only able to score one run and the game was called.
Vekich took the win for Taconite. He allowed four runs off of three hits and struck out nine.
Isaac Sandstrom took the loss for the Vikings. Sandstrom pitched four innings. He allowed 13 hits and 14 runs while striking out one.
The Vikings were held to three hits and Amos Falter had two of them. Lucas Stadler had the other hit.
Taconite ended with 15 hits, one a home run by Donahue. The Vikings were walked four times and Taconite picked up five walks.
Taconite players committed two errors and the Vikings had three.
