The Cook County Council on Aging seems to be a mystery to a lot of people. The Cook County Council on Aging, also known by an acronym of CCCOA, is the governing board of directors that oversees the Cook County Senior Center and the First & Second Thrift Store. The Senior Center is not owned or run by the county. It is a nonprofit 501 (C) 3 organization.

The name “Cook County Senior Center” describes our reach of service; we serve the entire community of Cook County.

The Cook County Senior Center’s and CCCOA’s main purpose it to provide a wide variety of services for the seniors in our county. To encourage them to get out of their homes to socialize, volunteer and basically enjoy themselves.

But, the Senior Center is open and welcoming to all of all ages. A few of our many non-senior services are: bi-monthly Department of Motor Vehicles driver’s exams, daily lunches, building rental, monthly legal aide, public computers and free WiFi.

The senior center had a fun Valentine’s Day celebration. Betty Wilson enjoyed bingo and a little gift.

Everyone is always welcome to join in on any of our activities such as card playing and trips. We welcome, encourage and cherish participation from our younger community also.

Tuyen (Twin) Hai Lam is a young fellow from Vietnam who has been in the Senior Center for lunch and WiFi use once or twice a week. He shared his opinion of the Senior Center, “I really love this place. I have never been in any kind of Senior Center before and thought it may be a place for only old people. But, I was wrong. The center in Grand Marais is welcome to everyone.

“And, I found that the people at the Senior Center are very sweet. I can see how they enjoy their lives, and how they have come to love this calm and peaceful atmosphere. They are such great people you should come and meet them. They have many values you need to learn for your young people.”

The core of our Senior Center is our volunteers and our participants. If you are interested or have any questions about our services, activities or volunteer opportunities, please stop in or give us a call (218) 387-2660.

The Senior Center as we see it today would not have been possible, if it were not for the very dedicated county residents who have served on the Cook County Council on Aging Board of Directors all these years. Facebook
