At press time, folks at the Cook County Senior Center were gearing up for Fisherman’s Picnic. The Senior Center is operating the Kiddie Rides and a brat and hot dog stand in the parking lot of the Senior Center during Fisherman’s Picnic.

However, the Senior Center wants to take a minute to clarify some misconceptions that have come up during Cook County community center planning. The Senior Center is not a county operated facility. It is a private, nongovernmental, nonprofit organization. We own our own building and land.

We strive to be as self sufficient as possible. Our daily operations are made possible by private donations, grant writing and a yearly county contribution.

The Senior Center is not a form of “welfare” in any way. We are here to help the community in many different ways such as weekday congregate dining; Meals On Wheels; frozen dinners to go; emergency phone system service; medical transportation; free wireless Internet; free public use computers; Internet assistance and training; online shopping assistance; bill paying assistance; private or public meeting space; MN driver’s license testing; blood pressure and foot care clinics; referral services and much more including—last but not least—a fun spot for folks to gather, visit, play cards, travel on trips and just enjoy life!

Watch your mail shortly for a fundraising letter along with our new brochure. We ask you to please reach deep in to your heart and checkbook and consider making a fully tax-deductible donation to the Cook County Senior Center.

July’s “Mystery Trip”

During the July “Mystery Trip,” seniors traveled north, up the Gunflint Trail. First we stopped and enjoyed the view from Pincushion Lookout. Many folks said they haven’t been there since it was the town dump!

Seniors on the trip visited and admired the beautiful new Hungry Jack Lodge. We had a delicious lunch at Trail Center. And Howard Hedstrom gave us a very educational and interesting tour of Hedstrom Lumber Mill.

We would like to extend a very special thank you to all who helped make this trip so much fun—Warren Anderson, Sarah Hamilton and Howard Hedstrom.

Sound like fun? Join the Senior Center for the next Mystery Trip on Monday, August 13. The cost is just $5 per person for transportation from the Senior Center. Lunch is at your own cost ($10-$12 should be sufficient). Can you guess where we are going? If you do, you win a free trip plus lunch on us!

This trip is funded in part by travel donations made by our board member Warren Anderson. Please remember to thank him!

Duluth Vista Boat Cruise

Another great event coming up is a trip to Duluth for a cruise on Monday, August 27. Those who go will enjoy a delicious Chinese Lunch at Huie’s Chopsticks Inn and will then board the Vista Star for a wonderful scenic and informative 1¾ hour tour of the Duluth Harbor and Lake Superior. Cost is $39 per person which includes roundtrip transportation and Vista Fleet boat cruise. In case of bad weather, the trip will be Wednesday, August 29.

Remember, the Cook County Senior Center is open and welcoming to all of all ages!
