We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our volunteers and folks who attended our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser event that was held Friday, July 25. Your help and participation made this event a lot of fun and a great success.

Our Senior Center is fortunate to have two young volunteers from the county’s Incredible Exchange Program, Keenan Hingos and Kestrel Pollock. The inter-generational interaction that has been going on is a pleasure and a benefit for all. The following is another interview by one of our students.

An interview with Linda Johnson by Kestrel Pollock, age 12

Linda Johnson was born in 1939, in Duluth and was raised in Grand Marais.

She went to school in that one circular school that I can’t remember the name of. She remembers the community of Chippewa City, but she couldn’t tell the difference between any races at the time.

When she was a kid she liked to ride around on her scooter and play cards. She also used to go to the movie theater.

The Cook County Senior Center celebrated with Lu Pettijohn as she reached her 101st birthday. Her special day was July 13.

In 1972, when she was 33 years old, she moved to Alaska where she worked for the state. She also worked on the pipeline for five years.

She moved back to Grand Marais in 1999. She has been going to the Senior Center just about daily for 14 years. She enjoys the Senior Center because the people are friendly and nice and the food is good.

She used to play the baritone. Her parents started Johnson’s Grocery Store.

Trip to Chik-Wauk

The Senior Center will be taking a trip to Chik Wauk Museum and Nature Center on Thursday, August 13. We’ll leave the Senior Center at 9:00 a.m. Cost is $15 which includes transportation and museum tour. In town pickups are available for a $1 fee. Enjoy stories with Harriet Boostrom (formerly of Clearwater Lodge) and Bill Boissenin (owned Forest Lodge on Clearwater in the 1940s).

Lunch will be at Trail Center at 12:45 p.m., at your own expense.

Casino Express trips

There will be three trips to the Grand Portage Casino in August— Wednesday, August 6; Monday, August 18; and Wednesday, August 27. Contact the senior center for more information. And don’t forget there is bingo on the bus along the way!

You may register for any of the senior center events by stopping by or calling the center at (218) 387-2660.
