Sometimes a walk is as good as a hit. For Andrew Miller and the Senior Cook County/ Silver Bay Babe Ruth team, that proved to be the case when Miller was at the plate in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and the score tied against Eveleth.
Miller patiently worked the count and drew a walk and the winning run crossed the plate.
Playing on a warm night in front of home field fans, the Senior Cook County/ Silver Bay (CC/SB) Babe Ruth baseball team picked up its first win of the season last Tuesday, July 7, when it defeated Eveleth 5-4 in the first game of a double header.
Isaiah Deschampe got things rolling for our local team when he took the first pitch he saw and singled in a run in the first inning. CC/SB led 3-0 after one, and Eveleth didn’t score until the third when they tacked three runs on the board to even the score.
Patrick Pierre started the game on the mound for Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB. Patrick went three-innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out one. Taking the mound for Eveleth was Braiden Lind. Lind allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out seven while walking one.
Eveleth’s big inning came in the third when a single by Bittman and double by Schlotec helped their team score three runs.
After the first big inning, CC/SB wouldn’t score again until the ninth inning. Eveleth also didn’t score after the third until the ninth when they pushed one run across the plate.
Pitching in relief, Paul Dorr picked up the win for Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB. Paul pitched two innings. He gave up one run on two hits and struck out two. Jacob Dorr and Andrew Miller came out of the bullpen to close the game in relief.
Each team hit the ball well. Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB finished with ten hits and Eveleth had eight. Leading the hit parade for CC/SB was Lucas Stadler and Isaiah Deschampe, who each had multiple hits. Stadler finished with three hits in five appearances at the plate. Collecting one hit each was Andrew Miller, Ero Wallin, Joe Deschampe, Kole Anderson, and Danny Deschampe.
Terrel led Eveleth with three hits in five at-bats.
Both teams played error-free ball. SS/ SB’s Ero Wallin had the most chances in the field, with seven balls hit his way.
Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB takes huge early lead and holds on for victory in the second game
After taking a nine run lead in the fourth inning, Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB had to hold on as Eveleth charged back scoring seven runs. Eveleth’s valiant effort fell short though as our local team won 11-9 in a high scoring game.
A big third inning saw CC/SB push eight runs across the plate. Andrew Miller singled on a 2-1 count to drive in one run, Joe Deschampe was hit by a pitch and drove in a run, Kole Anderson, Tate Crawford and Danny Deschampe were walked with the bases loaded to bring in three more runs and CC/SB scored a run on a stolen base.
Still in the third inning, Miller’s turn at bat came up again and he finished the inning off after he singled on a 3-2 count and knocked home two more runs.
Tate Crawford took the win for the team on the mound. Tate pitched three and a two-thirds innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out two.
Finishing the game in relief for CC/SB were Timmy Perfetto and Riley Tarver.
Terrel started the game for Eveleth, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out three in two innings. Bittman took the loss for Eveleth.
Andrew Miller was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Senior Babe Ruth CC/SB in hits. Riley Tarver, Isaiah Deschampe and Lucas Stadler also each had one hit in the game.
Both teams finished with six hits.
Eveleth finished with two errors in the field while CC/SB had four. CC/SB pitchers gave up six walks while Eveleth pitchers were more generous, allowing eight walks in the contest.
With the two wins CC/SB is now 2-2 on the season.
