Great Expectations had its annual Self Portrait Fair on November 6, and more than 200 people attended.
“Art work was center stage – and everywhere else – last Tuesday as GES hosted an evening celebrating student self-portraits,” said GES Director Peter James.
Children from kindergarten through eighth grade displayed their original works, artist statements, and process notes for families and friends.
“The art is wonderful,” said James, “and the way students shared so beautifully about themselves in their artist statements was truly remarkable.”
The art projects varied by classroom and included cubes that displayed different facets of the students on each face, plaster masks decorated with colors and symbols representing aspects of students’ interior and exterior selves, portraits that expressed a variety of emotions, and monochromatic studies that explored the use of light, dark, and pattern in art.
Judging by the enthusiasm of those attending, this annual event continues to inspire both the artists and their audiences.
