Minnesota’s state forest nurseries have more than 25 species of evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs available for purchase. Seedlings are sold in orders of 500 or more, although purchases may be broken down into increments of 100 of a species. Prices for 500 seedlings run from $90 to $470.

By law, seedlings purchased from state forest nurseries may not be planted for ornamental purposes, nor can they be resold, given away or removed with roots attached for a period of 10 years from the date of purchase. In addition, state forest nursery seedlings can only be planted in Minnesota.
Since 1933, Minnesota’s state forest nurseries, which are operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division, have provided healthy, native stock for Minnesota plantings. Seedlings grown from a local seed source are generally more adapted to prevailing and changing environmental conditions.

Plant seedlings to create a windbreak and shelterbelt, which will help reduce energy consumption and provide privacy. Mixed plantings of trees and shrubs provide excellent cover and a source of food for a wide variety of animals, big and small. The roots for trees and shrubs stabilize the soil and help reduce soil erosion from water and wind.
Trees also play an important role in mitigating climate change by absorbing and storing greenhouse gases.
