Second citation for littering for Hovland man

For the second time in two years, a Hovland man has been charged with a petty misdemeanor for improperly disposing of trash.

Jeffery Paul Holmberg, 58, of Hovland was charged on August 12, 2015 with unlawful deposit of garbage, litter or like after trash was found on Birch Drive in Grand Marais. Several items with Holmberg’s name on them were found. Paint matching a spill at the scene also matched paint spilled at Holmberg’s residence.

Holmberg told a Cook County Sheriff Deputy that he had paid a Canadian man $150 to dispose of the trash. He did not know the man’s name.

Holmberg pled guilty to unlawful disposal of garbage and paid fines and fees of $280.

On August 18, 2016, Holmberg was charged with littering not from a vehicle after a Grand Portage Conservation Officer found a pile of trash on Sleepy Hollow Road in Grand Portage.

According to the Cook County Sheriff Deputy’s report, the pile included electrical wire, Floe trailer snowmobile ski tie-downs, totes, road signs, cardboard boxes, potting soil, nail gun nails, garden hoses, fence material, a boat seat, yard tools, etc. A label with identifying information was found in the debris.

Holmberg pled guilty on September 21 and paid a fine and fees of $280. He will also be responsible for the cost of clean up by the Grand Portage Trust Lands office.
