Post Labor Day summer has become my favorite weeks of the year. The kids are back in school with many activities to keep them busy while the lodge and restaurant begin slowing down, allowing me to get some things done before the snow begins to fly.
The slow decline in tourism has sparked us to adjust the hours of operation for Raven Rock Grill for the fall. We are now opening every day at 3 p.m. and serving Happy Hour specials from 3-5 p.m. The reduced hours are such a relief after having a wonderfully busy summer; we love the idea of being a “supper club” and focusing our efforts on the locals until snowmobile season.
Temperatures are dropping, but there is still enough summer sunshine left to enjoy the outdoors, other than swimming, and there is less pressure from visitors after Labor Day weekend. I have already begun closing cabins for the summer homeowners on the Gunflint Trail who are already hanging it up for the summer.
It is such a peaceful time to enjoy Cook County and the great outdoor experiences it has to offer. Hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and stargazing are just a few of the spectacular things to enjoy right now.
The clear starry nights have been great for spotting constellations like the Big Dipper, which has been low to the horizon in the northern skies the past few nights. Cool evenings lead to cool mornings and the fog bank that can be found along the Devil Track Road, or somewhere along the hill leading to Grand Marais, has been thick enough to touch in areas.
The changing seasons are like new beginnings for us at Skyport, and as fun as summer can be, I am ready to break the daily routine and start on some exciting projects that have been set aside, maybe even fish for more than an hour at a time, I will let you know.
