With sections around the corner on Thursday, October 23 at the Cloquet Country Club some runners have their focus on that meet as a chance to make it to state and for others their last meet happened in Proctor on October 14.

With some of our top varsity boys focusing on sections they rested, which gave some of our younger runners new roles. Noah Smith and Finn Garry worked together as a pack pushing and pulling each other to each having a great breakthrough race. They separated with about ½ mile to go and Noah finished in 22nd place with a time of 19:03 and Finn finished in 19:50 in 37th place. Brenden Seipke ran a 20:32 coming in 52nd and he was followed by three determined runners Leif Anderson, Roman Schnobrich, and Sebastian Cannon. These three guys were striving to do their best to make a spot on the Sections team. Anderson had a personal best with 20:56, Schnobrich shaved off more time with 21:09 with Cannon close behind in 21:10.

Our varsity girls were led by a group of three: Matea Acero in 17th place with a time of 17:20, Molly Thomas in 20th place with a time of 17:31, and Abigale Seipke in 22nd with a time of 17:45. Closing in the gap behind this group is Kate Walsberg with 18:46 in 36th place. Alyssa Martinson, Ruby Walsberg, and Morgan Weyrens-Welch rounded out our varsity team.

Everett Hommes led our JV boys’ team with his steady time of 22:22 and a 38th place finish. Andy Kern was filled with determination today and finished in 23:49 bringing himself to a new personal best. He was followed by teammates David Blackburn in 24:21, Jake Bilben in 24:39, and Harvey Parker in 25:37.

Maya McHugh is making a comeback from her injury and led the JV girls with a 17th place finish and a time of 19:52. She was followed by Marin Hay and Mel Stoddard who worked together during race finishing with 21:06 and 21:11. Danielle Hansen has ended her season with a much quicker pace than at the beginning of the season. She ran a 22:51 and was followed by Hazel Babcock with 23:44 and Lucy Callender with 26:29.

All of the boys in the junior high race ran personal bests. Charles Seipke finished in 38th place with a time of 10:14 and JC Holman was in 40th place with a time of 10:18. Lynden Blomberg had a great race shaving off several minutes with a time of 11:57 for his 1½-mile race. Trent Spry and Doran Acero both improved and worked together finishing 12:22 and 12:27 respectively. Ian Parker really quickened his pace with a 13:00 finish.

Our junior high girls had a similar experience. Sophie Eliasen executed a smart race and finished in 6th place with a time of 11:01. Amelia Roth has really improved; she finished in 7th place with a time of 11:17. Ellen Callender quickened her pace by about one minute per mile and finished in a new time of 13:01. Chloe Blackburn also quickened her pace and finished in a time of 15:21.

My hope, with these young runners, is that by the end of the season they are able to take note of the value of their hard work and all of their efforts during their season. It is nice that they can end with so much improvement. However, it is even better when they can also walk away with the valuable life lesson being able to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Come and watch the Vikings run at 7A Sections. We are hoping that our varsity runners can enjoy the fruits on their labor on this day.
