Bode, a 2-year-old husky mix, has been missing in the Tofte area of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area since June 28. He has been spotted several times at the canoe portage between Burnt and Smoke lakes. The family hopes someone will be able to catch him.

A recently adopted dog was treated to a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at the end of June. Unfortunately, Bode, a 2-year-old, reddish- and cream-colored husky mix, disappeared while on that trek. He has been spotted a number of times since then, but no one has been able to catch the skittish 40-pound pup.

His owners of three weeks, Mindy Harris and Steve Gendron of Minneapolis, lost sight of him on June 28 at the portage between Burnt and Smoke lakes when his leash came loose. They scoured the brush and paddled back and forth, calling and looking for him. They got close several times, but Bode didn’t want to be caught. Sadly, they had to get back to Minneapolis and had to give up the search.

The nervous dog has been moving constantly since then and has been spotted at the Smoke Lake side of the portage and then a few days later, miles away on the Sawbill Trail—and then back again. The last sighting of Bode was on July 5.

Crews from Sawbill Outfitters went to the Burnt Lake portage with dog food and were able to tempt him near enough to pet him—but not to get a good hold on him.

Mindy is hopeful he will return to Sawbill Outfitters when he gets hungry. She said he was spotted as far away as the turnoff toward Kawishiwi, but seems to now be staying closer to the Burnt Lake portage.

The family has an older shepherd/ husky mix at home that has taken many BWCAW trips, but was getting too old for this journey. Mindy said before taking off, Bode did great in the canoe and on the portages. “He’s really cute and sweet,” she said.

Anyone who is able to catch Bode or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call Mindy Harris at (612) 790-1974.
