I think the seaplane taking off in the Grand Marais harbor is a good thing. It is an example of someone living here making a living. This is a business person who is putting food on the table and supporting his family. People need to leave him alone.
Or they should watch when he lands in the harbor. Kids’ eyes light up when they see the plane. They run down to the beach to ask questions.
And people get on the plane for rides. They get to see the harbor and the area from a pretty cool point of view. They probably wouldn’t do that if they had to drive to the seaplane base. They wouldn’t know that there were floatplanes around.
Having planes in the harbor has been a tradition since I was a kid. I was like one of the happy kids I see now.
If people want peace and quiet, there is a million-plus acres up the Gunflint Trail where floatplanes can’t go.
If that isn’t good enough, maybe the people complaining should just stay in the cities where they have built something on every square inch and where there really is noise pollution and light pollution. We have been protecting where we live for a long time without their help.
