57-year-old Schroeder women suffered multiple injuries when the vehicle she was driving collided head-on with a semi-trailer on Highway 61 between Silver Bay and Two Harbors.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident occurred on Thursday, November 9 at 10:18 p.m. at 6054 Highway 61 (Beaver Bay Township) when the southbound semi crossed the centerline and struck Sheryl Martinson’s northbound Subaru. According to the law enforcement report, Martinson’s airbag deployed. Her injuries, while numerous, are considered non-life threatening.
Road conditions were dry at the time of the accident, stated the incident report.
Inderjit Singh Bala, age 50, of Brampton, Canada, was the driver of the 2013 Freightliner. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was not transported to a hospital. Both he and Martinson were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. According to the state patrol, no alcohol was involved in the accident.
Martinson was transported to St. Luke’s hospital by ambulance where she was treated for numerous injuries which included a lacerated liver, broken ribs, a fractured and lacerated heel, and broken pelvis. Since that time Martinson was transported to a hospital in the Twin Cities for further treatment. Her stay at Hennepin General Hospital is unknown at this time.
While no charges were initially filed, Minnesota State Public Information officer Sargent Neil Dickenson said due to the nature of the accident, this wasn’t unusual. “Because a commercial vehicle was involved we have an inspector come and inspect the truck and check out the driver’s log. That can take awhile for the inspector to fill out and file a report.”
On November 14, the semi driver was charged with illegally crossing the centerline.
To add to Martinson’s injuries, her puppy Dakota was killed in the collision.
