Bids are being solicited seeking a contractor to repair two culverts this summer on the northern end of the Sugar Loaf Road.
Schroeder township officials made the decisions to replace two culverts and to also make repairs on the Schroeder townhall at their April 14 meeting. Peter Borson, a local Schroeder contractor, will prepare cost estimates to remodel the kitchen and repair the roof. Siding is also planned for, once the township receives quotes.
A possible third culvert will be installed at Sugar Loaf Creek if the Minnesota DNR hydrologist okays a smaller replacement culvert. Township supervisor Rick Anderson said the township could install a second culvert nearby that could handle overflow to make up for the narrower replacement culvert. The DNR has agreed to do a hydrologist report and get back to the township.
Rick Anderson moved, with a second from Bruce Martinson to approve a resolution authorizing that all Schroeder township meetings will now be held as teleconference meetings until the pandemic declaration set by the governor ends. The vote on the motion was unanimous.
Because this was the townships reorganization meeting, decisions had to be made about making any possible changes to the township leadership. Anderson motioned to continue having Tina McKeever serve as chair and Bruce Martinson as vice chair. The Cook County News-Herald was voted as the township’s official newspaper and the Grand Marais State Bank was designated as the Schroeder official depository, with the following listed as signatories: Tina McKeever, Bruce Martinson, Rick Anderson, Anna Green, Carla Menssen, Doug Schwecke, and Mary VanDoren.
Rick Anderson moved to approve a $5 increase per hour for the clerk, treasurer, and deputy positions with the motion unanimously approved.
Fire chief Phil Bonin reported no calls for the previous month and said that until the pandemic ended, fire department meetings were on hold until further notice. Phil also reported that Mikala Schliep was a new first responder for Schroeder.
Treasurer Carla Menssen said Cook County Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers contacted her and asked if the township could manage if the first quarter property taxes were delayed for a couple of months to allow later payment because of the pandemic. Menssen felt that with the townships’ current balances it would be okay to wait for payment and the supervisors agreed with her.
The dock at Dyers Lake is set to go in when the ice leaves the lake.
The Local Board of Appeals and Equalization meeting will be held on May 12 at 6 p.m. Because of COVID-19, the meeting will be held by teleconference on Zoom. Direction’s on how to attend the meting on Zoom will be posted on the Schroeder Township website.
