Schroeder Township meets

Schroeder township supervisors met June 13 to discuss a variety of subjects concerning the township. Supervisors Rick Anderson, Tina McKeever, and Bruce Martinson were all in attendance.

West End Cook County Commissioner Ginny Storlie reported that the commissioners were already working on the 2018 county budget. When asked if the levy would be lower than the 2016 levy of 11.2 percent, Storlie said she would be happy if the county board could get it below 10 percent for the coming year.

Newly elected commissioner Bobby Deschampe was a welcome relief, said Storlie. The county board had split up meetings that were attended by District 1 commissioner Frank Moe, who resigned mid-term because of concerns for his health. Deschampe won a special election for Moe’s seat and commissioners will now spread meetings to him that they were covering, said Storlie.

Charlie Muggley presented the board with information about the Schroeder firefighters’ interest in joining the Public Employee Retirement Association of Minnesota (PERA).

Included in the information was a statewide list of townships that have enrolled their volunteer fireighters in the PERA program.

Doug Andrews, accounting supervisor for PERA, sent a spreadsheet and a cost analysis based on $100 increments for the benefit levels requested ranging from $1,300 to $1,600 per year for retirement payouts for firefighters who have served five years or more as volunteer firefighters for Schroeder.

Should the board opt to include Schroeder firefighters in PERA, they will have to do so by resolution. Muggley—who serves as treasurer for the fire fighters – asked the supervisors to go over the material he had presented to them and make a decision in the next month or two.

A request for $20,000 for Birch Grove Community Education that was tabled from the May township meeting was again tabled until more information could be gained from a special meeting held June 28 in Tofte to discuss the matter in further detail.

In other business:

. Road and bridge report: The stop sign at Sugar Loaf is leaning and needs to be dug in and secured better, said Rick Anderson. The culvert at the bottom of Sugar Loaf needs to be repaired by MnDOT when they are working in the area but otherwise the road will soon be graded and is in good shape, Anderson said.

. When asked, Bruce Martinson said there was little movement on Schroeder’s request to leave the Tofte Schroeder Sanitary Sewer District (TSSSD). The township was awaiting word, said Martinson, from the township supervisors from Tofte on the request. It has been several years since the TSSSD did any formal work together, and at this juncture, Schroeder has asked to be removed from the agreement.

. Books will now be available at the community hall for the public to take home and read, said Tina McKeever. The Little Free Library was in place at the town hall, she said. Take a book, bring a book, that is the beauty of a Little Free Library. McKeever also added that and the fence for the tennis court was being removed and given away. The Little Free Library was made possible by a Great Place grant, added McKever.

. A pancake breakfast will be held Aug. 26 for John Schroeder Days.
