Schroeder Township holds Local Board of Equalization

Schroeder Township held its Local Board of Appeals and Equalization on Tuesday, April 11 at the Town Hall with Cook County Assessor Todd Smith on hand to answer questions.

The purpose of the meeting was to determine whether taxable property in Schroeder had been properly valued and classified by the assessor.

Only one person attended and asked to have his rental property reclassified to reflect that it was a rental property. Smith told the gentleman the steps he would have to take to get this accomplished, and the meeting ended on a happy note.

Following the Board of Equalization, the Schroeder Township reorganization meeting was held.

Bruce Martinson was elected chair, Tina McKeever vice chair, and the Cook County News-Herald was designated as the township’s legal newspaper.

Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen came before the board with a request for Schroeder to help pay the cost of a study aimed at improving the Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) radio service in the county. Lutsen Township earlier voted to donate 10 percent ($540) of the cost of the $5,400 study. Schroeder supervisors also agreed to give $540. Eliasen said he would ask Tofte Township to contribute next, with Colvill and Hovland also included in the study.

Supervisors approved a resolution to donate $1,500 to the Tofte July 4 fireworks.

A Great Place grant of $300 was accepted with thanks, and the money will be used to build a Little Free Library for the Town Hall.

Spring projects include staining the Community Center steps, making a new sign for the Community Center, sprucing up the Bob Silver field sign, getting a small roof leak repaired and other maintenance projects done as they arise.

A vote was taken, and it was unanimous to have Schroeder leave the Tofte Schroeder Sanitary Sewer District (TSSSD). Bruce Martinson will take the lead and secure an attorney for the township. Tofte has agreed to let Schroeder use money from the TSSSD account to pay for attorney fees with the agreement that the rest of the approximately $64,000 that is now in the account go to Tofte. The TSSSD has been dormant for years after it was determined that it would be too expensive to build a sewer line between the two townships.
