Schroeder survey will involve detective work

The Township of Schroeder will be getting its first proper survey since 1855, something private landowners in the area have been requesting for 15 years, according to surveyor Wayne Hensche at the August 9, 2011 county board meeting.

An individual property owner would end up paying $15,000-20,000 to have this done since references to the original survey markers would need to be made, Hensche said, but this will be done for an estimated $17.04 an acre, with a minimum of $500 for those with less than an acre.

The final price will be determined by the actual number of acres Hensche finds, but he expects it to be about $680 for a 40-acre parcel, and this can be paid to the county over 10 years at 1 percent interest and is deductible on federal income taxes.

The job will involve a lot of detective work and possibly some hanging from trees like Tarzan, Hensche said. He will be “looking for 150-year-old clues” on trees and on the ground, he said. “This is specialized work.”

Some surveys of the area have been done since the mid-1800s, but they have not been done with reference to the original survey and are thus not valid.

Hensche said the Schroeder town board voted unanimously in favor of going ahead with the survey, and 75 percent of Schroeder’s citizens voted in favor of it as well.

The county board voted to accept a petition from the Schroeder town board and Schroeder citizens requesting the survey and to hire Hensche to do it. Hensche expects to finish the survey next July.
