Schroeder prepares for snow

With snowflakes in the air and more soon coming, the Schroeder Town Board hoped bids would be received to plow the township roads. And two bids were opened at the board’s November 9, 2010 meeting, but neither bidder was interested— or capable with their current equipment— of plowing the Sugarloaf Road, which is almost four miles long.

Carl Crawford was low bidder interested in plowing the Town Hall/ Fire Hall parking lot, Schroeder Tote Road, Skou road, and Baraga Cross Road at $175 per snowfall. The board will ask the county if its West End snowplow operator can fit plowing the Sugarloaf Road into his schedule. If that fails, it will be back to the drawing board looking for help.

Fire Chief Phil Bonin said rescue squad calls “have been kind of quiet.” But Bonin announced that he had received 250 Ever Ready 9-volt batteries that are to be given to Schroeder homeowners for their smoke detectors.

“I got them from a grant, but I don’t know how we will distribute these batteries,” Bonin said, asking the board for ideas.

“Maybe we could hand them out at the post office?” suggested Clerk Carol Tveekrem.

Bonin thought this was a good idea and said he would take any other suggestions to help get these batteries to homeowners.

West End Cook County Commissioner Bruce Martinson told the board that the cell phone tower that will be placed at Taconite Harbor was still on track. He also asked the board to consider making a small piece of Schroeder-owned land (lot C) on the south side of the Cramer Road multi-use. This easement would allow both motorized and non-motorized use. Martinson said this change would give users easier access to the recreation trail system now in place.

Martinson also talked about Tofte’s plans for a feasibility study to look at the need for building an assisted living facility in Tofte. “A study done for the North Shore Hospital and North Shore Care Center only went a 20-mile radius outside of Grand Marais,” Martinson told the board. He asked board members if any of them had elderly parents or friends that might need an assisted living facility at some point and time. Everyone raised their hand and said yes, they had loved ones that will need help in the near future.

With that, the board passed a motion to write a letter of support encouraging Tofte to build an assisted living building that would start small but could be expanded as the need grows.
