Schroeder Baking Company is open for business

For all of you who picked up baking as a pandemic hobby but are sick of flour-covered counters and keeping your sour dough starter alive…there’s good news!

Once again, the “Open” flag flies high, frolicking in the spring wind out front of The Schroeder Baking Company. The new season officially kicked off on May 8. Their hours are 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., seven days a week, though the hours will extend to dinner time over Memorial Day weekend and after June 25 as they staff up. The Schroeder Baking Company (SBC) is on Highway 61 just a stone’s throw from the Cross River. Like most restaurants, COVID-19 and 2020 required some quick adaptation. They had to eliminate their indoor seating and install a takeout window. But there’s plenty of outdoor seating in the picnic area, which is also a great, safe place for little ones to stretch their legs and explore. They also added free Wi-Fi and a phone-charging station for those with a device in need of a quick pick-me-up.

Despite – or perhaps because of – the pandemic, 2020 was a very busy year. Kathy Lawrence, who took over the bakery from Linda Lamb in 2003, is expecting more of the same. “I anticipate a very busy tourist season, similar to the last year,” says Kathy.

Locals and tourists alike stop by SBC to start their day off on the right foot. You can keep it simple with the house blend or order a specialty coffee. But either way, it’s a bakery so treat yourself to a fresh pastry – rolls, muffins, turnovers. Their most popular item is a maple pecan danish. For those looking for something a little more hearty, they also do breakfast wraps.

For lunch they offer sandwiches, salads, and quesadillas. Pizzas are great to share with families. But you might want to get their most popular menu item – a calzone – just for yourself.

Ice cream is another house specialty. In fact, people come from far and wide for the espresso malt. Yes, it has a shot of real espresso.

Remember that everything is made to order so if you’re in a hurry just call ahead. You can find a link to their full menu on their Facebook page or go directly to schroederbakingco.wixsite.com/menu.

Schroeder Baking Company is open through MEA in October. So, if you’re ready for someone else to do the alchemy that is baking, see you at the SBC.
