School year ends with award for the graduating theater students

The Grand Marais Playhouse held its annual award ceremony last Saturday honoring the high school seniors who have made significant contributions to the local theater community.

Every year the Playhouse awards deserving high school seniors with “Commitment To Excellence in Theater Arts” awards. Each senior receives an award, name on the plaque in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts lobby and $100. The 2013 award recipients are Adrianna Berglund, Cailin Carpenter, Jordyn Kirk, Sarah Larsen, Mara MacDonell and Michaela Peterson. We will miss these talented thespians on our stage but wish them all the best on their journey forward.

In other news, the Playhouse will be changing the lineup for the Grand Marais Summer Theater Festival. A female version of The Odd Couple by Neil Simon will be replacing Moon Over Buffalo.

The Odd Couple will run July 19, 21, 25, 27 and Aug. 2, 4, 8 and 10.

The Grand Marais Playhouse “Commitment to Excellence in Theater Arts” 2013 awards were presented after the last performance of First Baptist of Ivy Gap. Award recipients (L-R) Jordyn Kirk, Michaela Peterson, Sarah Larsen, Adrianna Berglund, Mara MacDonell and Cailan Carpenter mimic the characters of Ivy Gap in an adaptation of one of the play’s songs. They sang, danced and laughed their way through We’ll Be Leaving Grand Marais Sometime Soon!

This hilarious comedy is by one of America’s funniest playwrights, Neil Simon. Publisher Samuel French offers the following description of the female version of the play: Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pigeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.

Auditions for Fit to Kill by Victor Cohan will be May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Fit To Kill is described as a thriller about strategy, betrayal, and deception. Adrian, a charming but self-indulgent chess master, enjoys a life of luxury thanks to his marriage to Janice, an older but still sexy and vibrant woman who has made a fortune as the CEO of an exercise empire. The arrival of Amy, a reporter with an agenda of her own, unleashes a whirlwind of deadly schemes that will keep audiences guessing until the final seconds.

First Baptist of Ivy Gap featured some poignant—and some hilarious—moments. (L-R) Michaela Peterson (in back), Sarah Larsen, Brenna Hay and Cailan Carpenter in one of the play’s lighter moments.
