I am writing to express my opinion that ISD 166 should honor MLK day. Superintendent Beth Schwartz was quoted in the Jan 31, 2014, issue of the Cook County News-Herald as commenting to the school board that “There is a lot of tailored instruction about Dr. King when school is in session on MLK day.”
However I also think there is probably “a lot of tailored instruction” about President Washington and President Lincoln around the time of Presidents Day as well.
It appears to me that either the school district should honor both MLK and Presidents Day with those respective days off or continue to provide “tailored instruction” for both those days and have classes on both holidays. To choose one holiday over the other appears discriminatory in nature.
