Current economic conditions challenge our nation, state and county. Closer to home our school district, because of difficult financial realities, has placed a referendum on the Nov. 2 ballot seeking additional funding support for our children.
This appeal may not suit the interests of those without children, those whose lives are focused elsewhere, and/or those who simply don’t recognize the critical impact our school district has on our lives. Politics aside, asking for more taxes is simply not something we Americans take lightly, especially when so many good folks may not have enough income as before.
The school board, teachers and administrators are doing a very good job of addressing both the fiscal realities of our times and options for continuing service to our county. But more is needed.
In our wonderful country we have the option to vote for taxes to support our communities. It’s an individual investment in the common good, something that Americans have responded to since this country began.
This referendum is not a total answer. But it wasn’t offered as such. While it can and will help our schools maintain success for a limited time, we need to seek greater community input and support. I believe we have the interest, people and wealth in our county to do just that. Our county schools are an indispensable part of the county’s infrastructure.
I can’t speak for others, but as a parent, former educator and fundraiser for two major universities, I have witnessed the powerful influence of education in daily life. Outside of our family and our place of worship, education presents one of our nation’s best tools to prepare future generations for leadership, citizenship and support for the common good. In this we are all stakeholders.
It’s said we only value something after it’s gone. I believe we will not settle for this in November. Our children need our help now. We can lend our collective support with pride and confidence in the future, thanks to a school district that truly makes a difference. We can’t leave this to chance. Please vote in favor of this school referendum.
