School chess tournament a big success

The elementary and middle school classes of Amanda Barras and Sue Nelson spent the 2016/17 school year playing chess, coached by a recent graduate: me. At the end of the year, we organized a tournament of the groups, along with teacher Jana Larson, and helper; Jeff Kern and Mike Carlson. The participants all received Blizzard coupons provided by Dairy Queen. The top eight players of the tournament were then invited to a pizza party at Sven’s.

The top four players were Andrew Hallberg, Caiden Spry, Adrian Howard- Larsen, and Tate Crawford.

Big thanks to DQ for providing coupons for 30 players.

Big thanks to Johnson’s for providing food and drink during the tournament.

Big thanks to Sven and Ole’s for providing the winners and volunteers with pizzas.

Big thanks to Mike Carlson for making a wooden trophy for the top player.

Also thanks to Amanda and Sue for letting their students out of class to play in the tournament.

The willingness of the community members and businesses to help with kids’ activities is what makes Grand Marais America’s coolest small town.
