School board ponders reductions

The ISD 166 School Board thanks those who voted YES in support of the recent school operating levy proposal. Many volunteers gave generously of their time and money to support the levy. We regret that the initiative was defeated.

We will continue to downsize the administrative budget and administrative structure of the district. In addition, in response to the levy’s defeat and declines in enrollment, we will identify areas to reduce as we build a balanced budget for FY17 and as we restore the fund balance to a reasonable minimum. These reductions will be fully scrutinized in coming weeks and months. We anticipate reductions of approximately $700,000 for the 2016-17 school year; additional reductions of a similar order are likely, spread over at least two years. For context, the total school operating budget for 2015-16 is $6,954,366; 76 percent of that budget is in personnel.

We will be open and forthright as we proceed. We recognize and regret that these reductions have to be made. Reduced resources will require a series of adaptations in how the district organizes and delivers services and maintains facilities. Thank you for your understanding and support as we move forward.
