After Cook County High School Principal John Engelking welcomed parents, grandparents, and community members to the 2009 Awards and Scholarship Program in the high school gym on Monday, May 18, he added, “I especially want to welcome our seniors. Thisis your day!”

It was a great day for many graduates who received academic and athletic awards and scholarships. Engelking started the afternoon program by asking the CCHS honor graduates to stand for a round of applause. Numerous scholarships were then presented (see list at right), with laughter and tears. All recognizing the diverse talents of the Class of 2009.

An award not seen at CCHS before was the Minnesota PTA scholarship of $500, which went to Emily Martin. Rosie Loeffler-Kemp, MN PTA president, presented the award explaining that the scholarship was awarded to the student who submitted the best essay on the topic Why Education is Important.

CCHS Band Director called forward the members of the Senior Band to present their awards and then named this year’s recipient of the John Phillips Sousa award. The award winner is selected by the band itself. Leah Laky was this year’s honoree.

Paula Sundet of Cook County Higher Education presented the Michel S. Beaupre Trade Scholarship to CoLee Johnson. The scholarship is given in memory of Michel Beaupre, a master electrician, to encourage young people to master a trade. CoLee will be attending Central Lakes College for heavy equipment. Michel's wife, Bev Denyes (right) was also on hand and she recalled that she graduated from Cook County High School with CoLee's grandfather.

Grand Marais Playhouse Director Sue Hennessy promised not to cry as she presented this year’s Playhouse awards—and then promptly broke into tears as she recognized seniors David Warren, Evelyn Miller, and Carmen Anderson.

Grand Marais Lion Max Bichel told the audience that the Lions are more than the group which organizes Fisherman’s Picnic. He listed all the ways the Lions serve the community, including providing a $1,000 scholarship to a CCHS graduate. He earned a laugh when he encouraged seniors to consider joining the Lions, noting that “we need some young people, since we’re a bunch of old guys.” Bichel presented the 2009 Lion scholarship to Marie Nordahl.

Numerous awards were presented to Cook County athlete-scholars, including the Senior Athlete of Year award, which goes to a male and student athlete each year. Recipients were Katie Borud—and Miles Drake and Sammy Warren, who tied. A US Army Scholar Athlete award was given by Sergeant Luther Reeder to “two of our nation’s finest young people,” Kari Nelson and Taylor Baham. The Cindy Nelson Award was presented by Lee Bergstrom, the 1978 recipient of the award given in Olympic skier Cindy Nelson’s honor. Bergstrom noted that the award is given to a student-athlete who lives up to the ideals of Nelson’s ski career and life, which is “A sound body, a sound mind, supports a strong life.” Bergstrom said she was delighted to present the award—a handsome watch—to Losha Senty and Marie Nordahl.

Numerous awards were presented to Cook County's athlete scholars, including the CCHS Senior Athlete of the Year award. The award is given each year to a female and male athlete. Recipients this year are Katy Borud and in a tie—Miles Drake (left) and Sammy Warren.

It was a good day for underclassmen as well, as Math League Awards were presented by Kay Tavernier and Zinter Math & Science Awards were given by Marie Lindgren.

Congratulations to all of the scholarship winners and the graduating class of 2009.

CCHS School Counselor Bryan Hackbarth presented scholarships from the Cook County Masonic Lodge of $1,500 to Mark Buckman and Lily Nelson-Pederson.
