Cook County will get more taxable land from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Scattered Lands Project, said Cook County Land Commissioner Lisa Kerr.
Kerr addressed the county board on March 28.
The program was started to determine what changes should be made to land ownership patterns to increase the value of citizens of the counties in the northeast region of the state.
“The Scattered Lands Project will reduce state-owned holdings by allowing all five counties of the Northeast Region an opportunity to identify ten candidate parcels and five alternate parcels from a list of state-owned parcels which will be considered for a suitable private ownership for each county to select candidates from,” said Kerr.
Once the parcels are selected and approved, the DNR will offer for sale up to 10 parcels for each county in the northeast region at public auctions to be held in the fall of 2017.
Kerr asked for a motion to approve formation of a committee to review the DNR parcel list and choose designated parcels to be sent for approval. She suggested that she and Commissioner Myron Bursheim, Administrator Jeff Cadwell, and Land Services Director Tim Nelson make up the committee, which commissioners approved.
Kerr said she had already identified 14 parcels that the committee can review. The list must be sent to the state by April 5.
