Although two of their matches have been cancelled due to the weather, the Cook County High School boys’ tennis team has been able to play one match so far, losing 5-2 to a strong Eveleth Gilbert team.
“Our two winning matches came from Lars Scannell at 1st singles and Pete Summers at 2nd singles,” said Tennis Head Coach Mark Summers.
Scannell, a junior, is the defending Section 7A and state consolation champion, and is currently ranked in the top 10 for Class A schools.
Summers, a sophomore, is a very strong player who has participated (often with Scannell) in tournaments all over the region and both have had high junior rankings in various age groups growing up, said Coach Summers, Pete’s father.
Although his team is young, Coach Summers is excited about their potential.
“We have 10 players on our team with most of them being quite new and inexperienced,” he said.
Joining Lars and Pete are Andy Kern, Tristen Bockovich, Caleb Phillips, Lucas Phillips, Colton Furlong, Isak Terrill, Greg Howe, and Jerod Spry.
“They’ve done a good job adapting to varsity play and are improving rapidly,” said Coach Summers.
As far as practice, Summers said, “We’ve had a few outdoor practices but have been forced to do tennis-related activities inside for most of our practices.”
The team’s next match is scheduled to be played inside on April 24 at Virginia and the team’s first home match is scheduled April 30 against Marshall.
“We have a flurry of matches over the next month culminating with the Section Tournament beginning May 15,” said Coach Summers.
