Most Americans, likely even Democrats, would agree with the Republican party platform. Our constitution is most valued for an individual’s rights to be preserved and protected. If people are the stewards of the government, then why not respect the government? If to “take back our country” means reduced government, a return to times when forests, waters, and minerals were harvested without regulation to provide financial gain for some, then this is unsustainable. Governmental regulations are needed to protect our future world from the plunder or destruction of natural resources, even though those rules can be viewed as cumbersome to those whose near-sighted focus is on personal wealth.
The United States may be considered “exceptional”. At the same time, with a little humility, we could learn much from other exceptional countries, such as Canada, Denmark, Australia, etc. Maybe something about less greed, about the sharing features of socialism; maybe something about compassion for immigrants. Use of tax dollars to build highways, bridges, schools, and parks is socialistic. Why not add health care to the list?
Scientific methods provide information for making responsible decisions. When wishful thinking is instead proclaimed as fact, backed by faith or trust in the divine, then we can be easily misled as demonstrated by Trump. It is distressing that the great Republican party picked Trump as their presidential candidate when potentially the Party could have chosen so much better. Please, no more Trump! Lesson learned!
Respectfully, Geri Jensen, Grand Marais
