Sawtooth Mountain Elementary, the Cook County Schools Education Foundation and the Grand Marais Art Colony have teamed up this winter and spring to support primary art education.
In January of 2023, the Education Foundation received a request for funding to cover use of facilities, instruction, and supplies for art instruction for 76 students in grades K-12. The Art Colony coordinated the logistical details, including supplies and instruction, and the school bused students, paraprofessionals and teachers to and from Studio 21. Through the collaboration of these three local entities, students were able to explore a variety of materials and techniques, including elements of design and composition for both two and three-dimensional surfaces.
Special thanks to Sawtooth Elementary first grade teachers, Stephanie Lindstrom and Natalie Shaw, for taking the leadership to plan with Art Colony staff and co-write the grant application, as well as being available for continued coordination efforts. Also, thanks to Alison Healy, the lead teacher for the sessions who developed the course content.
The Art Colony will host an exhibition at Studio 21 (21 West Highway 61) of work created by kindergarten 2nd grade students over the course of three art days. Students will wrap up their time by creating an artist bio and learning about visual literacy while viewing their installed work.
The community is invited to stop into Studio 21 to view the artwork on Wednesday, May 10 from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, May 11 from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
