“Get Your Flu Shot!” is the word from the caregivers at Sawtooth Mountain Clinic (SMC) who want to remind community members that we are entering flu season and flu shots are still available.
Flu shots are available by either calling 218-387- 2330 to schedule an in-person appointment or during any in-clinic patient visit.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), the flu vaccination is recommend for all people 6 months or older, yet fewer than 46% of adults got their flu shots during the 2018-2019 season.
“The flu shot is the simplest and easiest way to ensure against the need for medical treatment for influenza. As our healthcare system is stressed nationwide during the COVID- 19 pandemic, any step that might prevent you from needing medical attention is a smart choice for you – and your neighbors.” said Dr. Paul Terrill, Medical Director of the SMC.
Sawtooth Mountain Clinic ordered approximately 3,000 influenza shots when they became available. So far, about 1,500 vaccinations have been administered across Cook County, with 750 of those coming through several drive-up flu shot events held across the county.
“We want to thank the community for embracing our drive-up flu shot events and for their patience and understanding while they waited in those long lines,” said Kate Surbaugh, CEO of SMC, “But the job is not done and for those who still need a flu shot, simply call the Clinic to set up an appointment or ask for one during your next in-clinic visit. Come on in, wear your mask and you will be on your way in just a few minutes and be safer for the effort.”
Some community members have asked SMC why they are not offering
“First, our mission is to meet the health care needs of all members of the community – regardless of their ability to pay”, said Dr. Terrill, “Not only are high dose vaccinations three times more expensive than the regular flu shot, they have a higher risk of side effects, which in the long run can reduce patients’ interest in getting a flu shot in the first place. We will continue to monitor the efficacy of high dose influenza shots and may consider making them available in the future. But, our first priority is to safeguard the health of the entire community and vaccinate as many community members as possible, especially during the first Covid/Influenza season in history.”
SMC staff encourages all Cook County community members to continue to practice physical distancing, wear a mask, stay home if you are sick, and practice hand hygiene. If you feel ill – even mildly so – please do not hesitate to call Sawtooth Mountain Clinic nurses at 218-387- 2330. Following these recommendations will not only help reduce the community spread of COVID- 19 cases, but can also help prevent influenza from hitting more members of our community.
